25 OCT 2011: SOROPTIMISTS GO WILD IN BRIGHTON

October 2011

As some of you may know I am a member of a women’s service organisation called ‘Soroptimists’. Not many people have heard of us but we do interesting things like lobbying and taking action such as the Purple Teardrop Campaign www.purpleteardrop.org.uk to raise awareness about trafficking.

We also raise funds to support local, national and international projects with a view to educating women and girls around the world. For example, the Club I belong to in Winchester http://sigbi.org/winchester-and-district has raised money to build a school via our friendship link Club at SI Kisumu (Kenya). Globally we have raised almost £1 million to support Project Sierra which was a four year partnership between Soroptimist International and Hope and Homes for Children that has transformed the lives of women and children in Sierra Leone.

For my sins I am on the organising committee for the Great Britain and Ireland conference this year. There has been a huge amount of work involved by a fantastic group of volunteers to make sure the 1200 delegates who descend on Brighton on Thursday 27 October 2011 will have a great time. If you wonder where I am this week – I shall be in Brighton!
